Our Mission

To strengthen and improve summer camps so that future generations will benefit from the enriching experiences that they offer.

CampGroup - Family Owned; Family Operated

CampGroup was founded in 1998 by Bruce Zenkel and his son, Dan. Dan spent nine years as a camper and counselor at traditional Maine resident camps, eight of them at Camp Takajo in Naples, Maine. Bruce attended Camp Winadu and sent his three children to camp. Bruce and Dan envisioned a company that would bring sophisticated management practices to camp, while preserving and strengthening the traditional values that summer camp promotes. Today, CampGroup remains a family affair. Dan is CEO, and Bruce remains a member of the Board. Andy Benerofe serves as Chairman of CampGroup's Board, and Andy's son Mark, serves on the Board and chairs the company's Business Development Committee. CampGroup's other investors include David Bershad, whose son Jeff is CampGroup's Chief Financial Officer. CampGroup's investors, who include the Bershad's, Benerofe's, Zenkel's and the directors of CampGroup's camps, view the company as a cherished treasure, a family enterprise that is not subject to any short term financial pressures that might harm the long term interests of the CampGroup camps.

The Leader in Summer Camping

CampGroup, LLC, the largest owner/operator of for-profit summer camps in the nation, is at the forefront of summer camping. Each summer, over 5,500 children, ages 4-15 attend one of the Company's ten premium camps, which are located in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, New York, New Jersey and Michigan. We continually enhance each of our camps by maintaining the highest standards in leadership, safety, program offerings, staff recruitment and training and by constantly improving our facilities. We provide the necessary support and services to ensure the success of every camp season.

Each CampGroup camp is situated on a beautiful lake in a magnificent setting. Camp Danbee (girls), Camp Winadu (boys), and Camp Mah-Kee-Nac (boys) are in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts. Camp Wicosuta (girls), Camp Winaukee (boys), and Camp Walt Whitman (coed) are located in the White Mountain region of New Hampshire. Camp Akeela (boys and girls) is located in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Camp Cobbossee (boys) and Kippewa for Girls are located in Maine. Lake of the Woods Camp for Girls and Greenwoods Camp for Boys (brother/sister) and The Glen and The Grove are in the Lakes Region of Southwest Michigan. Camp Ramaquois (coed day camp) is in scenic Rockland County, New York, approximately 30 miles north of New York City. Black Bear Lake Day Camp (coed day camp) is located in Millstone Township in central New Jersey. Each one of our camps enjoys an excellent reputation for strong management, extensive facilities and a safe, caring and fun environment. Each of the Camps is accredited by the American Camp Association ("ACA")* and all except The Glen and The Grove (which we opened in 2005) and Akeela (which opened in 2008) have been in continuous operation for over 50 years.

Management at both the corporate and camp levels share a common goal - to strengthen and better traditional resident and day camps so that future generations will benefit from the enriching experiences that they offer. CampGroup has assembled a talented and experienced group of camp directors who are all passionate about growing and preserving traditional summer camps. Camp directors average more than 15 years of directorial experience and share an emotional commitment to their camps and to enriching the lives of children. Our camp directors are dedicated to the continuity of their camp's heritage and the lifelong relationships they have established with campers and their families. The directors work together as a team and share their individual expertise in all facets of camping.

Since its inception in 1998, CampGroup has developed unparalleled industry knowledge. This knowledge extends beyond summer camp operations to encompass all aspects of summer camp, such as: staff management, including recruiting, immigration matters, training and retention; programming; insurance; regulatory compliance; purchasing of food and camp supplies; maintenance and capital improvements; technology applications; budgeting and financial planning; accounting and cost management and camp marketing.

Campers at Campgroup camps receive an enhanced camp experience and are offered an opportunity to enjoy a wider breadth of programs and facilities than any single camp can provide. CampGroup camps offer an extensive land and water sports program, which emphasizes instruction and participation. An impressive array of specialty activities includes crafts, fine arts, dance, drama, gymnastics and outdoor adventure experiences, as well as exciting out of camp trips and special events. Each camp offers a distinctive program designed to differentiate its appeal.

In addition to the Camps, CampGroup also owns H&H Purchasing Services, LLC ("H&H"), a purchasing consulting business that serves summer camps and conference centers and not-for-profit social service, and Lakeside Retreats, LLC ("Lakeside"), which markets the various camp locations during the off-season.

CampGroup Supports the Community

In addition to providing outstanding summer camp experiences, CampGroup is dedicated to supporting worthy charitable causes. Our member camps instill in their campers a sense of commitment to the community by sponsoring fund raising events during the camp season. Camp swim-a-thons, dance marathons and recycling drives have raised thousands of dollars each summer. CampGroup is the proud sponsor of America's Camp, a one-week summer camp for children who lost a parent in the September 11, 2001 attacks. www.americascamp.org
